Nakusp Drive & Dip
September 6 & 7, 2008 |
Tour Leader: Pete
This has become an annual weekend drive over some great Miata roads in the beautiful West Kootenays to Nakusp for a dip in one of BC's best hot springs. A few members made it a day trip but most of the 15 cars stayed the night in Nakusp and took part in the Sunday activities.
First on the Sunday agenda was a visit to the Hills Garlic Festival in New Denver, where 1960’s refugees and the heavenly smells of garlic and food abounded.
After the Garlic Festival six cars continued on with a side trip to the ghost town of Sandon where silver mines once flourished. The five kilometre road into the site is gravel (horrors!!) but is very smooth and has a dust reduction treatment. One mill in Sandon is still operating and trying to produce some custom silver concentrate. There is a gift/memorabilia shop, a museum, an operating hydro station, rusty mining machinery, a 1908 CPR steam train, and a number of remaining buildings. |
