Westside Daze Car Show - Friday, July 1, 2011

Information was received from Rod Brown with respect to Westside Daze Car Show.  Rod is entering his 1990 Miata in the car show and thought it would be a good opportunity to show off the Miatas and promote the club.  He would like to have a number of our club to participate and have a fun day – the more the merrier and maybe even have cars from every year represented.  There is no registration fee for this event.  If you are interested in participating, please contact Rod by email at ----------.

Pete's Peachland Post-Pool Patio Party & Potluck - Saturday, July 9, 2011

The July pool party tradition continues... sort of. (For those new members who don't know the story, this used to be a pool party, but Pete's pool was boarded over and turned into a patio years ago. We still refer to the pool in the event title just to make Pete feel guilty.)

The potluck barbecue will be held Saturday, July 9 at Pete's place, ---------- in Peachland. See directions and map below. All OVMC members are encouraged to come out for the social event of the year (if you don't come, we'll talk about you!). The party starts at 5:30.

BBQ / Pot Luck:
Hamburgers, Bison Burgers, Veggie Burgers, Turkey Wieners, buns, condiments and new this year are tortilla dogs will be provided. Also, chips and salsa will also be provided. We ask that everyone bring an accompanying dish like a salad or a dessert.

Soft drinks will be provided. Bring any other libations that you may wish to consume (that means BYOB). Coffee will be provided around dessert time.

We will need to get a head count so please RSVP to Pete at ---------- by Thursday, July 7th if you plan to attend.

At Peachland's only traffic light (and a lovely one at that) on Highway 97, turn up Princeton Avenue (a right turn if you are coming from Kelowna, or a left turn if you are coming from Penticton). Head up Princeton Avenue for 3.5 kilometres. Turn right on Forest Hill Drive, go 100 feet, then turn right again onto Thompson Drive and look for number 6249 on the right side. You can park in the driveway or on the street. Go through the carport and down to the pool area. Now print off these directions...’cause you just know you're going to get lost if you don't!

Mount Revelstoke National Park - Saturday, August 6, 2011

A last-minute drive notice from Mark:

Debi and I are planning a day trip to Mount Revelstoke National Park this Saturday, August 6th. Anyone interested is welcome to join us.

We will be going directly there so mostly highway driving. Revelstoke is approximately 3 hours east of Kelowna and then about a 45 minute drive to the summit. There is a fee to enter the park and is as follows:
Adult: $7.70. Senior (65 and up): $6.80

At the summit there is one kilometre of paved marked trails to wander along through sub-alpine meadows and views of the Selkirk and Monashee mountains. Signs provide information about this fragile area where winter lasts up to nine months of the year. The photo opportunities are incredible!

South and Central Okanagan: Meet at the Orchard Park Mall Tim Horton's at 9:15. We will leave at 9:30 sharp. North Okanagan : Meet at the Vernon Tim Horton's by Rona (2501-58th Avenue) at 10:15. We will meet you there and depart by 10:30.

Please bring a picnic lunch.

I am looking for a place for dinner in either Revelstoke or Sicamous. If anyone knows of a nice place that could handle a group of us, please give me a call at _____________ or email _______________.

Meeting & Social - Wednesday, August 24, 2011

This month's meeting will be a Picnic Get-Together at the Gellatly Nut Farm, at 6:30 pm, and then back to a regular meeting in September, at which time we could talk about future Sun Runs. Gellatly Nut Farm Regional Park is located at 2375 Whitworth Road in West Kelowna.

Midweek Car Museum Run - Tuesday, August 30, 2011

This run is being planned by Al.

Meet at Cherry Pit restaurant (2565 Highway 97, at the south end of West Kelowna) at 9:00 am for breakfast.

Leave around 10:00am for Nixdorf car museum just before Summerland, admission $17 tax included, if there is 4 of us group rate is $13.50. inspect approx 100 cars on display.

Leave when everyone has seen enough, continue south on 97 just past Penticton to the Okanagan family amusement centre for a stirring bump to pass go kart race session. Approx $9.00 maybe be less dependant on number in group.

From there open, either return home or continue on 97 to OK Falls for lunch or ice cream.
From there return to Penticton either the east side road, or via Green Mountain road which would be a little different as we would be going backwards to the norm.

Schedule is very flexible, re route changes or whims, the idea is just to get out and have some fun. Communication via hand held, those with extra bring along to share with those that don't.

Nakusp Drive & Dip Weekend - Saturday, September 10 & optional Sunday, September 11, 2011

Pete is once again organizing this drive over some great Miata roads in the beautiful West Kootenays to Nakusp for a dip in the hot springs. You have the option of returning home the same day or spending the night in Nakusp and taking part in the Sunday activities; a visit to the Hills Garlic Festival near New Denver and possibly a side trip to the ghost town of Sandon.

Saturday, September 10:
• 8:30 - Breakfast at The Jammery (8038 Highway 97N, the yellow building between Duck Lake and Winfield). If you don't want to come for breakfast, please meet the rest of the group in the parking lot at 9:30.
• 9:30 - Leave The Jammery parking lot.
• 10:00 - Meet Vernon area people at the Okanagan College meeting spot; the parking area on the north side of College Way near the near Highway 97 intersection.
We'll make our first pit stop at the BC Hydro rest area just before Cherryville.
The next stop will be at the Needles ferry. There is usually a short wait for the ferry, so this is a good opportunity for a bite to eat if you bring your own lunch. There is a picnic area and washroom at either end of the ferry.
Continue zooming through to Nakusp and up to the Nakusp Hot Springs for a dip. Remember to bring a towel and padlock to avoid these additional charges.
• Option 1 - Make it a day trip and return home the same day.
• Option 2 - Plan to stay in Nakusp overnight (see accommodation info below).
• Dinner Time - We will be making a group reservation for anyone wishing to join us for dinner. Time and location we'll passed on to the group Saturday morning prior to departure.

Sunday September 11:
• 9:30 - Leave Nakusp and drive to New Denver and take in the Hills Garlic Festival on the shore of Slocan Lake. It's all about all kinds of garlic, garlic in foods (even ice cream), plus craft stalls and some musical entertainment.
• Option 1 - After the Garlic Festival there is an optional run up to Sandon for any history buffs. Around the turn of the century Sandon was a thriving mining town of about 5000, but due to fires, flood and neglect there is little remaining today. There are a few original buildings however, the original (and still working!) water turbine powerhouse, and a museum. Sandon's website is a great source of history and information.
• Option 2 - From New Denver, return home the way we came via Nakusp and Vernon (290kms to Kelowna).
• Option 3 - From New Denver, make it a loop and return home via Silverton, Castlegar and Rock Creek (400 kms to Kelowna).

Accommodations in Nakusp:
Attendees are responsible for booking their own accommodations in Nakusp and should do so ASAP. The club has set aside 6 rooms at the Selkirk Inn in downtown Nakusp at a rate of $70 for a queen bed and $80 for two queen beds or two double beds, depending on availability. The price includes continental breakfast. Please call Selkirk Inn's reservation line at: 1-800-661-8007 and tell them you are booking into the rooms reserved for the Okanagan Valley Miata Club. If the 6 rooms fill up there will likely still be rooms available, so please call.
You are also free to stay wherever you like of course. Below are links to other accommodations in Nakusp, or click here for a PDF of the Nakusp Visitor's Guide, which contains a list of accommodations on page 10.
Lelend Hotel - A heritage hotel (1892, the oldest in B.C.!) overlooking Upper Arrow Lake in downtown Nakusp. Beautiful lake views from the restaurant and patio. Separate bar too.
Kuskanax Lodge - Hotel with restaurant in downtown Nakusp.
Nakusp Hot Springs Cedar Chalets - On the mountain next door to the hot springs. Minimum two night stay on weekends.

If you plan to attend, please e-mail Pete at ---------- with the following information:
1) If you plan to come for breakfast Saturday morning.
2) Whether you have booked to stay the night in Nakusp or will be making it a day trip.
3) If you would like to join the group for dinner Saturday evening.
