Nakusp Drive & Dip Weekend - Saturday, September 12 & optional Sunday, September 13 (RSVP Required, see below)
|
Pete is once again organizing this drive over some great Miata roads in the beautiful West Kootenays to Nakusp for a dip in one of BC's best hot springs. You then have the option of returning home the same day or spending the night in Nakusp and taking part in the Sunday activities; a visit to the Hills Garlic Festival near New Denver and a side trip to the ghost town of Sandon.
Saturday, September 12:
• 8:30 - Breakfast at The Jammery (8038 Highway 97N, the yellow building between Duck Lake and Winfield). If you don't want to come for breakfast, please meet the rest of the group in the parking lot at 9:30.
• 9:30 - Leave The Jammery parking lot.
• 10:00 - Meet Vernon area people at the Okanagan College meeting spot; the parking area on the north side of College Way near the near Highway 97 intersection.
• We'll make our first pit stop at the BC Hydro rest area just before Cherryville.
• The next stop will be at the Needles ferry. There is usually a short wait for the ferry, so this is a good opportunity for a bite to eat if you bring your own lunch. There is a picnic area and washroom at either end of the ferry.
• Continue zooming through to Nakusp and up to the Nakusp Hot Springs for a dip.
• Option 1 - Make it a day trip and return home the same day.
• Option 2 - Plan to stay in Nakusp overnight (see accommodation info below).
•Dinner Time - If you would like to join the group for dinner, we will be making dinner reservations for our group at the Leland Hotel Restaurant overlooking the lake in downtown Nakusp. Time and directions we'll passed on to the group Saturday morning prior to departure.
Sunday September 13:
• 10:00 - Leave Nakusp and drive to New Denver and take in the Hills Garlic Festival on the shore of Slocan Lake. It's all about all kinds of garlic, garlic in foods (even ice cream), plus craft stalls and some musical entertainment.
• Option 1 - After the Garlic Festival there is an optional run up to Sandon for any history buffs. Around the turn of the century Sandon was a thriving mining town of about 5000, but due to fires, flood and neglect there is little remaining today. There are a few original buildings however, the original (and still working!) water turbine powerhouse, and a museum. Sandon's website is a great source of history and information. Last year most of us missed out on a short walk to the upper end of the town where there are several "original" houses so that might make going to Sandon again worthwhile.
• Option 2 - From New Denver return home the way we came via Nakusp and Vernon (290kms to Kelowna).
• Option 3 - From New Denver make it a loop and return home via Silverton, Castlegar and Rock Creek (400 kms to Kelowna).
Accommodations in Nakusp:
Attendees are responsible for booking their own accommodations in Nakusp. Backroads to Barbecue - Sunday, October 4 - RSVP required for barbeque portion of the event
|
Many members missed out on our big annual BBQ in July due to the forest fire and highway closure in West Kelowna, so we're going to give it another try. Jim and Mary's house in Penticton is the destination this time around, but before dinner we need to work up a good appetite first by heading for an afternoon drive and taking in the colours of fall.
We're nearing the end of the Miata season, so we hope everyone can make it out for a day of great driving and socializing. If you can't make the whole day, feel free to come out for just the BBQ or just the run. Either way we'd love to see you.
The meeting spot this time will be the McDonald's in Summerland at 11:00 am. Coming from the Kelowna direction, turn right off of Highway 97 onto Prairie Valley Road (the second set of lights in Summerland) then immediately left into McDonald's (you can see it from the highway). See map.
From Summerland we will tour some different back roads and make a stop for a picnic lunch around noon. Bring a picnic lunch as well as folding chairs or a blanket.
After lunch we do some more back road zooming and make a stop at a winery south of Oliver. We'll then make our way to Jim and Mary's house between 4:00 and 4:30 for the start of the barbecue (if you're coming for just the barbecue you can come by any time after 4:30).
Jim and Mary will be looking after the BBQ end of things, and the rest will be potluck. Everyone is asked to bring a little something like a side dish, salad, appetizer or a dessert. Also, please bring whatever you would like to drink and folding lawn chairs if you have them.
Please RSVP to Jim and Mary at ---------- and let them know if you will be attending the barbecue and what type of food item you would like to contribute.
Jim and Mary's house is located at ----------, just south of Cherry Lane Mall in Penticton (for those who were at Jim and Mary's BBQ last year, please note this is not the same house, they have moved). See map.
For those wondering about highway closures in Summerland, the lengthy scheduled closures are no longer occurring. There are still occasional delays, but they are very short and rarely occur on weekends. Click here for the latest closure information. |

Annual Potluck Christmas Dinner Party - Saturday, December 5
(RSVP Required)
Our annual Potluck Christmas Dinner Party will be held Saturday, December 5 at Marianne and Norm's home at 173 Terrace Hill Place in Kelowna (the Wilden subdivision in Glenmore). See map below. Appetizers will be served at 5:00 pm, followed by a turkey dinner at 6:30 pm.
The turkey will be supplied but we need appetizers and side dishes to go with it. We ask that everyone bring one of the following: appetizer, salad, veggies, potato dish, rice dish, or dessert. Soft drinks will be supplied, but you must supply your own alcoholic beverages.
Please RSVP by emailing Marianne and Norm at ---------- or give them a call at 250-861-4931. Let them know how many are coming and what food item you plan to bring so we can ensure we don’t have everyone bringing the same thing.
We will again hold the wild-and-wacky gift exchange, an ever-popular fun event involving cunning strategy and thievery. Each person is asked to bring one gift to a maximum of $10. It can be anything... fun, practical, or just plain goofy, so use your imagination!
There will be music for dancing after the gift exchange, and everyone is encouraged to bring along music that they like to dance to.
