September Nakusp Run
The run started on Saturday morning at 8:00 with breakfast at Mingles; partaking of the good vittles were Nancy and Harry (Penticton), Nicole and Dutch, Silk and Ron, Brenda and Pete, and Bernie (who came on his bike but did not go on the run). Kate and Kurt met us at Mingles after breakfast. With Ron in the lead we then headed up to the turnoff at OUC Vernon where we met two more Miatas, Jim (Vernon) and Ken (Kamloops). That's our group in Vernon below:
We then headed across the shortcut and along Hwy 6 at a leisurely pace (Pete was leading) to the BC Hydro rest area for a stretch and bio break. After that Jim took the lead over the best part of the highway, to the Needles Ferry. Naturally we arrived just as the ferry was leaving, so it was time for the picnic lunch for the hungry.
Eventually the ferry came and we made the short crossing and the run up to the town of Nakusp, where we were to meet Terri and John (who live just south of town) who were to join us for the run up to the springs. After some searching and an inquiry it turned out that they had given up on us because we were late (but there is more to this story later). So off we went up to the springs on the very nice, twisty, recently resurfaced road. Mission accomplished; we all made it into the pool! The water was hot and the weather was beautiful.
After suitable soaking time Nancy/Harry, Nicole/Dutch, Jim and Ken headed back home. Silk/Ron and Kate/Kurt headed on to Nelson (see Ron's write-up to find out what happens when you let a couple of accountants loose in the Kootenays). Brenda/Pete stayed at the springs and then did a tour of the East Kootenays.
The next morning (Sunday) Terri and John from Nakusp came up to the springs looking for (and finding) Brenda and Pete and we decided to do our own mini-run up to Halcyon Hot Springs (a relatively new facility with a great view across Arrow Lake). We had a good soak and a nice lunch before heading back to Nakusp.
Thinking about next year's run,

Nakusp to Nelson and Back
Hi Everyone,
Pete mentioned he would like a bit of a report on the Nakusp to Nelson run. So here goes:
After leaving the main group in Nakusp, Kate/Kurt and Silk/I had a nice drive to Nelson. We set a reasonably spirited pace to New Denver and a bit further until we came around a curve to a road block by three RCMP cars. Kurt was waved right through, but they had business with me - I was given a official warning for no front license - 14 days to correct and present to a RCMP detachment. #@*%# but better than the $196 ticket they could have given me. The balance of the drive to Nelson was more sedate. Over all the trip took about 1.5 hours, but I forgot to note the exact times so this is an estimate.
The Prestige Inn in Nelson is very nice. We had a great room with lake view and the room service food was good too!
Sunday morning bright and early (10:30 ish) Silk and I went for breakfast in the hotel - Kurt and Kate were already there. After breakfast, getting gas and directions, we left Nelson shortly after 11:45. The drive to Kaslo, with moderate traffic, and a beautiful sunny day, was 45 min. Road was nice but not one you want to push it on as there are a lot of driveways and houses right on the highway. After a 15 min stop in Kaslo we headed for New Denver. The road here is very twisty (great fun) and we set a pretty good pace, tempered a bit because there were a lot of wet areas on the road (in the shade) that were a bit slick. Passing was a bit of a challenge, and I managed to get the car sideways once crossing a wooden bridge after passing an SUV. It was a short bridge and I got traction back once we hit the other side and continued our drive. The best part was from the Sandon turn off to New Denver. Nice new pavement and very tight. I almost turned around and did it a second time! The trip from Kaslo to New Denver took 25 min, and another 30 min to Nakusp.
After a bit of shopping in Nakusp, we were off again. Stopped at MacDonald Creek Prov. Park for a picnic and got to the ferry in time for the 4:00 sailing. Got of the ferry at 4:10 behind 11 vehicles. Stopped in Lumby after a very enjoyable drive at 5:10, then continued on to Vernon and then home.
Great weekend drive. Total round trip from Westbank was 850 km, with most of it very fun roads.

Backroads to Bavaria event, October 1-3, 2004
Seven Miatas in total represented the Okanagan this year. Jim, Marnie & Bev and Bev & Renold left from Kelowna meeting up with Harry & Nancy in Penticton. Jim & Mary and Larry & Geraldine from Penticton also made the trip south but at different times. We met Ulf & Nancy Kailuweit from Oyama there as well.
A fun event with spectacular scenery, great weather, good food and drinks.
